Swimming Pool Safety Inspector Course
Legislative changes to the Building Act 1975 in 2010 require a pool safety certificate from a licensed swimming pool safety inspector to be in place as part of the sale and lease process of properties with swimming pools.
Master Builders Pool Safety Inspector Course, which has been developed in partnership with the National Swimming Pool Institute, is approved by the Pool Safety Council.
This course aims to provide participants with a thorough grounding in the legislation, standards and guidelines underpinning the duties of a pool safety inspector, and how to apply this knowledge while carrying out pool safety inspector duties.

Outcome
Successful participants will be issued with a Statement of Completion.
Topics covered
Occupational health and safety, BSA licensing, business basics and communication, pool safety legislation, standards and guidelines, pool safety inspector code of conduct, the pool register and record keeping, what are minor repairs, pool safety barriers and maintenance, and conducting inspections.
Assessment
Assessment includes a pre-assessment questionnaire (included in the RPL process), research assignment, site visit to carry out a swimming pool safety inspection including an inspection report, and written assessments.
On the final day of the course, the Pool Safety Council will supply a Pool Safety Inspector Exam. Evidence of successful completion of this exam is essential for the licensing requirements with the Pool Safety Council.
Licence
Participants will need to apply for a licence directly with the Pool Safety Council. An application form with evidence of successful completion of this course, professional indemnity insurance, a suitability declaration (Form 27B), a passport photo and photographic identification together with the relevant licensing fees will need to be completed.
Face-to-face delivery
Master Builders offers this program through a classroom based format over three days. Day one training is conducted on a Friday with a break of a week to allow for research and assessment reports to be completed. Day two and three are run consecutively in the following week.
Eligibility criteria
Prior to the commencement of this three day course, participants are required to provide evidence of each of the following documents to satisfy the requirements for the purpose of recognition of prior learning (RPL): a current safety induction card and a current BSA licence.
The current BSA licence must be in at least one of the classes listed below:
- Builder Low Rise, Builder Medium Rise or Builder Open
- Carpentry
- Builder Restricted to Structural Landscaping
- Builder Restricted to Swimming Pool Construction
- Structural Landscaping (Trade)
- Swimming Pool Construction, Installation and Maintenance.
Participants are expected to have sufficient level of language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) skills and successfully complete a pre-assessment questionnaire.

Member: $1,020
Non-member: $1,200
Please note: A non-refundable deposit of $200 is due and payable at the time of submitting the initial registration and documentation for the RPL assessment. The remainder of the fees are due and payable on confirmation of enrolment. Payments can be made via credit card, cash, money order or cheque. These fees include a non-refundable administration fee of $25, course materials, resources and light lunch.

To complete the enrolment, candidates will need to ensure they pay all associated fees prior to commencement of the training program and identify any learning needs required to support a successful outcome.
Candidates for the Swimming Pool Safety Inspector Course will also need to:
- Submit evidence of all documents listed under the eligibility criteria above, including the pre-assessment questionnaire
- Purchase copies of AS1926.1-2007 Swimming pool safety – Safety barriers for swimming pools and AS1926.2-2007 Swimming pool safety – Location of safety barriers for swimming pools.
Once enrolment has been confirmed, participants will be supplied with pre-course reading resources. It is expected that all participants familiarise themselves with these materials prior to the commencement of the course.
