Getting the basics right
Master Builders can help you with getting the basics right when it comes to work health and safety. Make sure you have the following mandatory elements covered before beginning any work on site.
Construction safety plan
A construction safety plan is a documented health and safety plan for a specific workplace. Before work begins, the builder (i.e. the principal contractor) must prepare a construction safety plan for any workplace where construction or housing construction work exceeds $80,000.
Work method statements
A work method statement is prepared by the builder for their employees or by the subcontractor for the work they do. A work method statement details how certain prescribed and high-risk construction activities will be undertaken safely at the workplace.
General safety induction
All people doing construction work in Queensland must successfully complete a general construction induction course recognised by Queensland law before they start work in any construction activity.
Master Builders delivers the General Safety Induction as a four hour course, providing an awareness of common work health and safety issues in the construction industry.
Site-specific safety induction (commercial projects only)
Any person who will enter an area where construction work is being performed must complete a site-specific induction given by the principal contractor.
The site-specific induction is based on the construction safety plan and must include:
- Expected duration of construction work
- How the principal contractor will monitor and review effectiveness of control measures implemented
- Site rules
- Emergency procedures, including name and contact details of the first aid officer
- Plant provided for common use and directions about how it is to be used
- Details of site health and safety officer and committee (if applicable).
Need more information?
The above elements cover only the foundation of managing safety on site. An effective safety system also relies on constant assessment, review and monitoring of personnel, plant and work practices as the job progresses.
