Construction safety plans

A construction safety plan is a documented health and safety plan for a specific workplace. Any workplace where construction or housing construction work exceeds $80,000 requires a construction safety plan, prepared before work begins.

The builder (i.e. the principal contractor) cannot allow work to start unless:

  • The plan has been discussed with or a copy given to all employees and subcontractors
  • The plan is available or readily available for inspection.

If any changes are made to the safety plan, the builder must stop the affected work, amend the plan and re-issue it to affected employees and/or subcontractors.

Safety plans are accompanied by work method statements, which detail how certain high-risk activities will be carried out safely.

Templates & training

Your local Master Builders office can provide you with a template for a construction safety plan.

We also run training courses developed to help you to complete and manage a safety plan during construction. Refer to the course calendar or contact your local office for training times and details.
